What's in a fin? ... that which we call a fin

By any other shaper could turn so sweet?

Misquote. Opposite meaning. Shakespeare forgive me!

The point is - if you've ever had the chance to paddle a craft with a fin shaped by Brian Bills, you are one lucky person! The first time I got a Brian Bills fin (Circa 2002), I passed it around at a BBQ and everyone inspected the fiberglass work of art. At that time, it was a red, "dagger" fin for a 12' stock Eaton paddleboard. Since then, Brian has made me other fins, including one for my Epic V10 surfski.

Last week, I got the opportunity to have Brian make me a two-part fin for my new Bark Pink Panther board.

My coach Eric Abbott dropped my board off with Brian Bills for a few days so he could get the fin just right. The stabilizing fin articulates with the turning fin and fits flush into the fin box at the bottom of the board. As far as I know, this style of fin was first introduced by the Aussies. It allows the board to make softer corrections on the water (because of the stabilizer). My first unlimited board (a 15'10" Mike Eaton) had just a turning fin, and it worked very well. But, as I moved away from the round bottom boards and into the double concave Bark boards, I've also become a believer in the stabilizing fin (I spent some time adding in/taking out the stabilizer and like how the stabilizer feels).

For the panther, I wanted to get a custom fin because I was having a bit of trouble with the fin box fitting properly.... After a few days at Brian Bills' shop,  I  picked up my board with its new fin to discover that the fin is PINK (turning fin) and BLACK (stabilizing fin).

Style-y AND effective!!

The design of the fin results from some serious R&D by veteran paddler Brian Rocheleau - who jokingly told me I owe him a copyright payment for use of the template.

Wow! What a great fin! Thanks BC fins :)

.... and Eric Abbott, not to be left out of the fin fun, got himself a BC dagger fin in baby blue. Nice, nice (just not as pretty as the pink/black combo pictured above - shhh!). He's going to test it in the Maui Moliko Run race this Sunday. Go get um Eric!

Joe Bark says "sell sell sell"

... since I got my new Pink Panther board,
I have to trade in my previous models to make room in the rack.

For sale:

1. Blue Beauty $2k OBO - this board is 15'6". It was my first magic Bark board. It won the Mokapu race in 2008, set the (still standing) Cline Mann race record in 2008. In 2009, it moved to Kauai where it has helped me train and learn to prone/knee paddle unlimited boards. The board has a rounded nose and a pulled in tail to create a wonderful combination of stock/unlimited feel. The board has a real nice double concave bottom, perfect rocker and is smaller volume - made for a a person about 110-160lbs I would say (give or take). I highly recommend it if you are wanting to make the stock to open transition. I need to make space for the Pink Panther to come home and will gladly ship the board via Young Bros ($50 interisland) / A'ala shipping ($150 to mainland).

2. Green machine $600 OBO - this board is one of Joe's first double concave boards. I raced it in the Makapuu-Hawaii Kai warm up race in 2008 and Marc Rocheleau raced it in the Mokapu race in 2008. The board is 16'6" and has a lot of rocker. The pad on the board is scratchy from use, but overall the board is solid. It has some volume and would like a larger rider (160+). A great board if you want to enter unlimited paddling for a small price tag.... This is a deal as the foam blank alone costs at least $500. Selling cheap because the board has been rack surfing for the past few years and needs a home. Located on Oahu. I can't seem to find a photo of it, but if you're interested let me know, and we'll get you photos or let you see it in person.

email me at kanesa@gmail.com to chat about the boards, buy or view them.

Cline Mann race goes off with fast times and almost-epic conditions

Textbook Rising Tide.
Trades 15-30 mph.
Blue Skies.
World Class Paddlers.
New Board.
Let's go!

I was looking to set a new record / personal best in yesterday's Ko'olaupoko race in memory of Outrigger Waterman Cline Mann. The Ko'olaupoko is the best known warm-up for the Molokai Channel (in fact it used to be a qualifying race!). It's 17 miles from Makai Pier, around Makapu'u Lighthouse, past Sandy Beach (where a body boarding contest was taking place), past Hanauma Bay, past Maunalua Bay, past Diamond Head Lighthouse and finishes at Kaimana.

The water around Makapuu point is notoriously big and wild as are the sets that stack up outside Hanauma Bay and the Portlock Wall (where Molokai Channel finishers paddle by enroute to the finish in Hawaii Kai). Yesterday was no exception. With the rising tide, we all expected to be singing gleefully down the face of large swells. Instead, a mix of North and South swells combined with the East swells produced by the trade winds to result in hard-won rides and a lot of bouncing around. It was definitely a race that required some serious skill to pull off gracefully. Nonetheless, the tide was with us and overall times were pretty fast - arguably a testament to the time that the entrants have put in training in tough conditions.

I posted a 2:43.33 for first female (8th running Ko'olaupoko win) and 15th overall in the long course on my new unlimited (15'6") Pink Panther. I was about 1.5 minutes off of my 2008 record time of 2:41.57. My Bark team mate Joanna Bilancieri was second overall woman on her new stock Baby Blue Bark board, and my coach Eric Abbott won the men's stock division on his Zebra Bark. Brian Rocheleau was the top Bark finisher unlimited, coming in at 3rd place. Jamie Mitchell took top honors (for the 9th time in a row), followed by fellow Aussie Joel Mason.

Pink Panther Gets Wet

Big Mahalos to my coach Eric Abbott for not only picking up my board from A'ala shipping, but ALSO unpacking my board and helping me get it rigged! I'm still playing around with the fin, and might even get a custom fin from North Shore fin shaper Brian Bills (who makes these incredible fins that are like pieces of art) - it will be the ultimate compliment to my new Pink Panther!

So we water tested the board on Friday July 9 (also my brother's birthday!). Just a short run from Wailupe to Kaimana Beach, Oahu. Always feels great when your paddling buddy (Eric) is hooting and hollering for you - you know you're doing great! I LOVE the board. It is more of an unlimited style than I've been paddling; a bit more volume, a flatter rocker, and fleshed out nose. I definitely noticed the more paddle power needed to get it going (and the need to anticipate bumps, which I've been working on for the last few years), but when this board catches a wave, it is able to fly, linking wave to wave and jumping over waves to reach higher and higher speeds. I'm super stoked to be able to test it in the Cline Mann race this Saturday and also to paddle it across the channel!

Pink Panther Has Arrived!

My new Joe Bark (www.barkocean.com) weapon has arrived and is waiting for me on Oahu. Thanks to my training buddy (aka "da coach"), Eric Abbott (www.wailupeboys.com), the board was safely retrieved from A'ala shipping yesterday and unwrapped.

These are the first few images of the new pink beauty, aka the Pink Panther. A bit less rocker, a bit more volume in the nose, a killer paint job.... she's going to get wet for the big (17 mile) Cline Mann Ko'olaupoko race this Saturday from Makapu'u to Kaimana Beach. I can't wait!

RECORD GROWTH IN PADDLEBOARD SPORTS CLOSES ENTRY PERIOD FOR 14th ANNUAL MOLOKAI-2-OAHU WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN RECORD TIME

HONOLULU (July 6, 2010) -- The Molokai2Oahu World Championships of Paddleboarding, long considered to be the most  prestigious paddleboard race in  the world, has for the first time in its 14 year history sold out.  With over 140 entries, this is the largest field in the history of the event and the first time the race has sold out, illustrating record international participation with particular growth in stand-up paddleboard (SUP) racing.  Entries of both team and solo paddleboarders have signed up to tackle the formidable 32-mile Ka'iwi Channel that separates the islands of Molokai and Oahu, Hawaii.

The race begins at Hale O Lono on Molokai, at Sunday, July 25, and finishes  at Maunalua Bay on Oahu. The top athletes will complete the 32-mile channel crossing in just over five hours. Click here for online athlete roster.

Unlike short- and middle-distance races, the 32-mile Molokai2Oahu World Championship is the ultimate extreme test of a paddler's endurance and athletic ability. With a depth of 2,300 feet, the Ka'iwi (aka Molokai) Channel is infamous for its heavy seas, debilitating heat, and nightmarish currents. Race rules mandate that every single entry must have their own escort boat accompaniment, support, and be qualified to compete in the race. Including official race boats, there will be a flotilla of over 200 craft crossing the Molokai Channel on July 25.

The event,  considered to be the most prestigious of all races for SUP and paddleboarding, draws the best of the best in the sport from  Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Brazil, Japan, England, and the United States (Hawaii, California, New York, Florida, and Massachusetts). Entries are equally weighted between paddleboard and SUP, men and women as well as co-ed teams.

One of the more prolific racers in this year's race is Australia's Jamie Mitchell, the undisputed 'Paddleboard King of the Ka'iwi' with eight consecutive victories in the traditional category and the current world record time (4:45:03). Equally adept at both traditional knee paddling and SUP styles, Mitchell will return in a quest for his ninth title in 2010.

"I have a lot of fun with SUP, but when it comes to the Molokai Channel there is something about doing it in the traditional way that keeps me coming back," said Mitchell. "I know that after eight wins people wonder what's left to prove, but the Molokai channel is such a personal pursuit for me and I feel like I still have personal goals that I'd like to achieve for no-one other than myself."

The race is working with a new event management partner this year and is supported by several industry related sponsors.

"This year we have had our share of challenges early on, but to have the event sell out for the first time in its 14-year history is a huge testament to the relevance of this race in the paddling community and Hawaii's place as home to the World Championships of the sport," Said Rob Farrow of the M2O group who is managing the event. "The legacy that Mike Takahashi has created and that we are tasked with continuing is a huge responsibility and one we look forward to maintaining for years to come."

Other paddlers of note this crossing are:

Archie Kalepa (Maui), veteran lifeguard, big-wave rider, all-around waterman and SUP expert. Last summer Archie completed 187 miles on SUP through the Grand Canyon. Archie will team up with Dave Parmenter in the SUP team division.

Jeff Denholm (California), Patagonia ambassador and multi-discipline athlete who will be the only amputee in the event, contesting the solo paddleboard division. Denholm lost his dominant arm during an accident on an Alaskan fishing trawler. Jeff designs his own athletic prostheses that enable him to continue his sporting pursuits of surfing, paddling, mountain biking and skiing.

Gerry Lopez (Hawaii/Oregon), known as the Pipeline Master in he pre-SUP life, will team up with business and surfing partner Sparky Longley (California), and Hawaii lifeguard Edmund Pestana in the SUP team division.

Brad Gerlach (California), former world No.2 ranked professional surfer, will partner with Chris Christenson in the team paddleboard division.

Ann Hettinger (Kauai), a 52-year-old grandmother who turned from chain-smoking suburban mom to extreme endurance athlete, is taking on the solo SUP division and has been documenting her journey on film: '32 Miles from Now'.

Kanesa Duncan Seraphin (Hawaii), defending women's paddleboard champion.

Ekolu Kalama (Hawaii), defending men's SUP champion.

Jenny Kalmbach (Hawaii), defending women's SUP champion who recently completed the 72-mile (!) paddle between Oahu and Kauai.

Top 10 Fastest Times EVER in Molokai Race History

The new Molokai to Oahu website has some interesting stats on the history page. I recently learned that I have the 10th overall fastest time for a stock board crossing in the race. Pretty stoked to be in the top 10 overall I have to say! This is after 13 years and many, many excellent watermen have raced. What an honor!

Right now the stats are just for men paddleboarding unlimited and stock. I hope they add categories for top women finishers, top teams, top SUP times (men and women). It would also be neat to have oldest and youngest finishers, etc. I'll have to get on that :). In the meantime, here are the top 10 stock times, and a link to the rest of the race history.
